Hello everybody. This is Errol, Ada's new shop baby. He's adorable, obviously, but he needs a lot of attention. So for the month of August, Ada's hours and opening times are going to be a little weird. Because Ada is a mom and pop (now it's literal) operation, and since mom and pop have to stay home with baby, we have enlisted the help of some new volunteers (as part of a new partnership which will be officially celebrated on September 23rd): the Frequency Writers! They will be watching the shop for us throughout the month. However, because they have their own lives with their own jobs, they cannot always be there. So please bear with us! Ada will be open as much as possible, from 12 - 5pm. If it's closed during those hours? Sorry. Baby.

Two Ada events this month!
First, on Friday, June 16th, a QTZ reading featuring Alli Simone-Defeo, Beatrix Urkowitz, Suzy Hex, Tommi Parrish, and probably others. It begins at 7pm, it's free and it's fun!
Then, on Thursday, June 29th, a reading of The King in the Golden Mask by its translator, Kit Schulter. Alexis Almeida, an Argentinian poet, will also read. This event also starts at 7pm, it is also free, and it will also be fun and interesting. Do come!
This June, Ada Books finally gets some class; specifically, a Frequency Writers class! Here are the details:*
Literary ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)**
This course is designed for intermediate and advanced English language learners interested in developing their reading, writing and conversation skills through literature and creative writing. Learners will explore both classic and contemporary short stories, essays, and poems that span cultures and perspectives in North America and discuss them with an eye for content, context, and craft. Readings may include works by Ralph Ellison, Raymond Carver, Sandra Cisneros, Junot Diaz, Edwidge Danticat, Flannery O’Connor, Ernest Hemingway, Kazuo Ishiguro, Shirley Jackson, Bonnie Jo Campbell, and Jimmy Santiago Baca, among others. They will also learn about the background of the writers they read and what inspired them to write and reflect on their own journeys and relevance of their voices in today’s society.
Learners will write weekly creative pieces based on exercises inspired by the texts. They will receive individualized feedback on their work with attention to grammar, vocabulary, and craft tailored to their English levels and personal goals. They will then choose one or two of their pieces to revise, share at a final reading open to the public, and possibly submit for publication.
Classes will meet once a week for two hours for six weeks during the summer. Learners will do the reading outside of class at their own pace, and may complete writing exercises in class or opt to take more time with them at home.
Instructor: Maryann Ullmann
Dates: Wednesdays, 6/14-7/19
* Rates for the class can be found at Frequency Writers' website.
** This text is available in Spanish on the website.

Valerie Hsiung, Arielle Brown and Vanessa Pacheco get Publicly Complex at Ada this Saturday, March 11th. Wine and cheese will make things merry. The fun starts at 6pm.
On Saturday, March 18, Ben Seretan (above, Brooklyn) along with Host (not pictured, Providence) will make music in your ears and minds. This is a free event but bring your wallet because you'll probably want to buy some of the singers' merch. Will there be drinks? I don't know, what are you bringing? Starts at 7pm.
Join us on February 28th for a night with Elena Passarello and Lucas Mann. Elena will be reading from and talking about her new book Animals Strike Curious Poses (pictured above). Lucas Mann will lead a Q & A and we will all be captivated. Plus: free wine! So set aside some time on the last day of this dreaded month. The fun begins at 7pm.
